On-grid vs Off-grid: which is right for your home?
Choosing between on-grid and off-grid solar is one of the biggest decisions you will make — and it is not just about price. It is about how you use electricity, how reliable your local grid is, and how much autonomy you want.

What is an on-grid system?
An on-grid (grid-tied) solar system is connected to your utility's electricity network. During the day, your panels generate power. Whatever you do not use immediately is fed back into the grid — and your utility credits you for it through net-metering. At night, you draw power from the grid as usual.
Key advantage: No batteries needed. This makes on-grid the most affordable option per kilowatt.
Key limitation: When the grid goes down, your solar system shuts off too. This is a safety requirement — you cannot push electricity into a grid that linemen might be working on.
What is an off-grid system?
An off-grid system is completely disconnected from the utility. All the energy your panels produce is stored in batteries, and you run entirely on that stored energy. You need enough battery capacity to cover your night-time usage and cloudy days.
Key advantage: Total energy independence. No electricity bills, no grid outages, no utility paperwork.
Key limitation: Batteries are expensive, and you need to oversize both your panel array and battery bank to handle peak loads and low-sun periods.

The battery alone nearly doubles the cost. And that is for a single day of backup — if you want two days of autonomy, you need another ₹2,80,000 in batteries.
Reliability — the real question
Here is the nuance most comparison articles miss:
If your grid is reliable (outages less than 2 hours/month): On-grid is the clear winner. You save ₹3+ lakh upfront, still get 85–90% bill reduction through net-metering, and the rare outage is an inconvenience, not a crisis.
If your grid is unreliable (outages 4+ hours/week): Off-grid or hybrid becomes the rational choice. Running a diesel generator during every outage costs ₹15–25 per kWh — far more than battery-stored solar at ₹5–8 per kWh over the battery's lifetime.
If you are in a remote area with no grid access: Off-grid is your only option, and you should size generously. Undersized off-grid systems lead to frustrating power rationing.
The hybrid alternative
A hybrid system gives you grid connection plus battery backup. You get net-metering benefits, and the battery covers you during outages. It costs about ₹1–1.5 lakh more than on-grid (for a modest 5 kWh battery), but far less than a full off-grid setup.
For most Indian households and businesses, hybrid is the sweet spot — especially as battery prices continue to fall.
